Xarel.lo, Macabeo and Parellada
Complex, elegant, toasty, citrus, white fruit and brioche
Agustí Torelló Matá is a family winery that produces Reserva and Gran Reserva Cava in the Penedès region. Founded in 1950 by Agustí Torelló, the winery uses Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada from vineyards in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, the capital of Cava and the heart of the Penedès region. They organically farm 40 hectares and have contracts with a further 60ha. The fruit comes from vines that are at least 30 years old. Xarel.lo and Parellada add structure and body to the Cava with Macabeo taking the main stage. This indigenous thin-skinned grape variety is very temperamental and is notorious for growing too big and bursting. Agustí Torelló only produce vintage Cava and carry a date of disgorgement on the label. For this magnum, it was January 2017. With longer ageing than regular Cava, this Gran Reserva is more complex and elegant. Brioche and vanilla are evident along with some citrus and white fruit characteristics.
